Detailed Description

Creating an America City for Health

SE MN (greater Rochester) is undergoing tremendous change. We have the DMC initiative which declares that we will be an America City for Health.  We also know from initiatives such as Journey to Growth and Intercultural Cities Initiative that as much as we strive to sustain and grow our leadership in the healthcare industry we must also work on diversifying our economy. To make it happen we also must improve and work on the human ecosystem that underpins the regional economy.

While Mayo Clinic is the preeminent healthcare provider in the world, the next phase of leadership for our region must also be in the space of wellness provisioning and caring -- building an environment that is conducive to health and wellness.

We also know the world is changing -- it's fast-paced, entrepreneur and globally connected.  And there are choices for medical destination. The future of Rochester and SE MN though bright and promising requires intentional design to forestall any below-the-surface impediments that hinder our regional growth journey.

And there are some concerning indicators.

SE MN, Olmsted County, Rochester - Regional Backdrop and Growth Roadblocks

In the recent Rochester City survey, the number 1 attribute respondents like about Rochester is that it is a small town. And the number 1 concern they have is growth.  Given these results, how should community leaders, growth advocates interpret the local reality and desire? What actions are called for to ensure as Rochester population grows in parallel with increase in diversity and demographics changes, that there is companion plan to bring about needed cultural transformation so that growth does not forsake the "small town" feel.

About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
