Background

A number of DMC Transportation RFP questions were brought up by Susan Park Rani, DMC board member

DMCC Board Meeting Video Recording: April 18, 2016  at 01:01:07

including:

1. What was the selection process for companies to attend the 3/2/2016 meeting? Who got invited? Were there any MWO participants?

2. Did the 3/2/16 meeting pass on exclusive information that favored firms at the meeting in the RFQ/RFP process?

3. Have DMC EDA and the City of Rochester, via their transit program consulting firm, SRF, conveniently taken the easy path and defaulted to using a closed network of establishment "quality/schedule proven" vendors thereby inadvertently excluding potential MWO participants?

April 22, 2016 PB reporting on Rani's remaks about need for DMC transportation contracting process to be more inclucive.

"Destination Medical Center Corp. board member Susan Park Rani repeatedly quizzed speakers during this week's DMCC board meeting, asking about efforts to include women- and minority-owned companies.

The ripples of her questions hit shore almost immediately; less than an hour later, Rochester City Council President Randy Staver brought up the concerns during a committee of the whole meeting while discussing a potential consultant for a proposed inclusionary housing policy.

"Just a quick aside, you know, I realize this company might be a good one, but we were just chastised in the last meeting for not making a more deliberate effort to make sure that we're looking at women- and minority-owned businesses in terms of soliciting polls and so forth," he said.

Rani's comments were not the first of their kind. They come after continued prompting by Rochester City Council member Sandra Means, who has made it clear she wants a city conversation about the issue before the end of the year, when she ends her time on the council. On Monday, Means said the issue had spent enough time at the back of the agenda, and Assistant Rochester City Administrator Gary Neumann offered some encouraging commentary."

About Beam
  • For the commercial sector, we tend to register startup activities (new companies and new commercial projects) that bring diversification and high-impact opportunities to the area.
  • For the non-profit sector, we wish to shine light on all the organizations and services that otherwise labor under relative obscurity.
  • Our hope is that dmcbeam.org will encourage cross-sector collaborations and creative solutions.

While there are a number of registries in the community, dmcbeam.org's  distinct value is to pilot a database with a data structure and categorizations that answer the questions such as: What organizations or projects/programs in our community that have purported relevance with some of the over-arching focuses put forward by initiatives such as DMC, J2G and Health Improvements?

This database could be used as one of the ways to explore the capacities of the community. If you are someone on an exploratory journey to learn about the greater Rochester community. dmcbeam.org could be an interesting first step.
