Black-owned and minority-owned businesses are critical engines of local economic growth, job creation, and community vitality. In Rochester, the situation is especially urgent, as our community has very few Black-owned businesses, limiting opportunities for wealth-building and long-term economic stability.
The economic case is clear. A Citibank report estimates that gaps in business ownership have cost the U.S. economy $2.9 trillion in recent years. While Black-owned businesses grew by 14.3% in 2021, significant barriers remain. At the current pace, it could take 80 years for business ownership to reflect population levels. Closing this gap could generate 600,000 new businesses, 5 million jobs, and $2.9 trillion in revenue nationwide.
For the Rochester Branch of the NAACP, achieving economic stability is a strategic priority. Initiatives like the Black Excellence Expo directly support this goal by uplifting local entrepreneurs, expanding opportunity, and strengthening our regional economy.
